Mystic Valley Engineering Student Society is a newly activated NSBE Jr. chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Kituuma & Co. is providing their STEAMulating Young Minds (SYM) offering to MVESS. This partnership launched on Sept. 21, 2019.
This partnership was driven by the idea that even within the higher performing schools, there was a consistency in the failure of them to meet their gap narrowing goals in their minority populations. Using fun and motivation, Kituuma & Co. seeks to narrow the gaps; minimize the impact of cultural and linguistic diversity; positively impact the community; and prepare our youth to compete in a global marketplace. Specifically, SYM was created to improve the possibilities for under-served students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math + Entrepreneurship.
There are seven slated sessions of hands-on engineering enrichment and a lunch and learn on entrepreneurship. Instruction and facilitation for SYM is provided by Malden parents and students from the Northeastern University NSBE chapter.
The vision that anything is possible is what truly motivated the SYM program. By nurturing strategic decision makers, inspiring them, SYM enables youth an understanding that their only limits are the laws of physics. The mission of this partnership is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
The values that fuel the mission are: risk-taking, teamwork, leadership, responsibility, accountability, discipline, community, professionalism, fluidity, and diversity.
The long term goal of this program is to see a 5% increase in math, science, and technology scores. Future goals also include expanding to provide this offering to all grades and to also offer weekly sessions. Expanding SYM’s reach and network is key and by entering competitions, participating in conferences and other activities, the goal is to expose youth to a wider range of opportunities will be attained.
